Translation - The Rise of the Money-suckers

Was frantically browsing through the net just couple of days back for information on places in KL in which I could translate my birth certificate to English and some government sites could sometimes be a pain to surf for information on their services. I do know that Putrajaya offer the translation services but from KL, it's just too bloody far.

Finally, got to know from a friend that Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka does translations of documents but that was years ago, I took a trip there and found they do not do that anymore. Fortunately, they did redirect me to this Malaysia Translators Association (MTA) down Jalan Maharajelela.

I went all the way there, ascended flights of stairs to the first floor and arrived in front of a small door and a sign to take off my shoes before entering. Okay....

Obediently, I took off my shoes and as I glanced into the lot, a couple of heads turned to look at me from behind a glassed counter, which is almost blocked beyond view, as if they're doing something illegal. A man walked out and politely greeted me and tended to my documents before passing them to a large woman. She ran through with me, the prices and other details in a mix of Malay and English. Payment done, contact details given and I was in and out of the place in less than 10 minutes with a receipt:

Translate birth cert - RM40** (to be pick-up the day after)
An extra copy of the same document - RM10
A total of RM50 for two copies of translated birth cert that looks like a typed-in generic form that they can produced in less than 5 minutes.

**Oh, if I were to need the document to be done immediately, it would be RM60, and plus an extra copy, probably to a total of RM70?

If I remember correctly, Putrajaya (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) will do it for only RM20 (don't quote me on this) but plus petrol to and fro, I guess it would be the same. However, I do commend on the MTA's staff politeness. They're now probably still hiding behind the glassed counter, laughing at the sucker who is blogging about them now.
